NeuroVR 1.5 now available: many new features, a new low cost ($399) HMD supported, better interface, ALWAYS FREE...![]() The first official showcase of the new release (1.5) of the NeuroVR software was during the 13th edition of the annual CyberTherapy: Changing the Face of Healthcare international conference. The conference attracts from all over the world physicians, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals interested in emerging and future tools for diagnosis and therapy. Specifically, the conference is designed as a forum for encouraging and sharing innovative research on information-based tools for clinical care and medical education. Presentations are chosen to educate participants on:
During the Behavioral Health & Rehabilitation session - scheduled on Tuesday, 24 June 2008 - Prof. Giuseppe Riva, Ph.D., gave a presentation entitled: "NeuroVR 1.5: A Free Virtual Reality Platform for Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Neurosciences". Main goal of the presentation was to describe the main features of the system and to detail the clinical areas in which the NeuroVR software is actually tested in controlled clinical trials. All the participants to the session received the NeuroVR installation CD. Below are available the abstract of the presentation, the slides and the recorded presentation (video). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NeuroVR 1.5: A Free Virtual Reality Platform for Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Neurosciences 1 Applied Technology for Neuro-Psychology Lab, Abstract. Virtual reality (VR) can be considered an embodied technology whose potential is wider than the simple reproduction of real worlds. By designing meaningful embodied activities, VR may be used to facilitate cognitive modelling and change. However, the diffusion of this approach is still limited by three main issues: poor usability, lack of technical expertise among clinical professionals, and high costs. To address these challenges, we introduced last year NeuroVR (http://www.neurovr.org/ – http://www.neurotiv.org/), a cost-free virtual reality platform based on open-source software, that allows non-expert users to adapt the content of a pre-designed virtual environment to meet the specific needs of the clinical or experimental setting. Following the feedbacks of the users we developed a new version – NeuroVR 1.5 – that improves the possibility for the therapist to enhance the patient’s feeling of familiarity and intimacy with the virtual scene, by using external sounds, photos or videos. Specifically, the new version now includes full sound support and the ability of triggering external sounds and videos using the keyboard. The NeuroVR platform runs on standard personal computers with Microsoft Windows; the only requirement for the hardware is related to the graphics card, which must support OpenGL.
